Answers to some of the most common questions about living at The Shelby House of Hope.
What is a recovery residence?
A recovery residence is a safe, home-like place to live that supports healthy recovery from substance use disorder through peer support. It is not a treatment center — it’s a supportive home where residents live alongside others in recovery and encourage one another.
Who can be a resident?
The Shelby House of Hope is a home for adult women who are committed to their recovery from substance use disorder and to living in a drug- and alcohol-free home. We welcome residents participating in medication-assisted treatment (MAT). The best way to find out if the home is a good fit is to submit an application or call us.
Do you accept residents on medication-assisted treatment (MAT)?
Yes. We welcome and support residents who are participating in medication-assisted treatment.
How do I pay for it? Is there help available?
Residents are responsible for a monthly cost of living, and we’ll go over the details with you privately when you apply. Many residents don’t have to cover it entirely on their own — there is help out there, and we’re happy to help you find it. Here are good places to start:
- Your county Behavioral Health Department (through the DHS in the county where you live) — contact the behavioral health department for the county you live in to ask about recovery housing funding and support.
- Your probation or parole agent — if you have a probation or parole agent, ask them about funding for recovery housing. They can often point you to resources or help arrange support.
- SAMHSA National Helpline — a free, confidential, 24/7 service that can connect you with treatment and recovery resources in your area. Call 1-800-662-HELP (4357).
- Wisconsin Recovery Voucher (RV) Grant Program — funded by opioid settlement dollars, this program can cover up to six months of supportive housing in a recognized recovery residence for eligible individuals with an opioid use disorder and a history of homelessness. Applications go through a local RV Administrator.
- Donor-funded assistance through The Shelby House of Hope — thanks to the generosity of our donors, we may be able to help cover part of the cost for residents who need it. You can request donor-funded assistance right on our application, or ask us about it when you call.

How long can I stay?
There is no fixed time limit. Residents are welcome to stay as long as they are actively working their recovery and following the house guidelines. Recovery looks different for everyone, and we support each resident for as long as the home is the right fit for them.
What are the house expectations?
Residents agree to keep the home free of alcohol and illicit drugs, treat housemates and neighbors with respect, follow the home’s courtesy rules, and take part in the recovery community. The home’s code of ethics, grievance procedure, and grievance contact are posted inside the residence.
